about

This song went through so many drafts, revisions, tweaks and adjustments, mostly to find a chord progression that felt honest to the lyrics, and is kind of the opposite of Donated To Silence in terms of the songwriting approach.

lyrics

somewhere someone's always telling me what to do
the clouds are looking slate-like, blue and grey
i can see the sign from two blocks away; snowfall wouldn't surprise me today
the mission isn't over until the final fall -- let's take this sorry party to the wall
let's take this sorry party where no one's gone before, we'll crowd up all the echoing streets
i'll take my time, apologise, and stumble to my feet
my own sorry party's in defeat
as i face the blizzard may i never come to harm
when every night i return into your arms
i can see the sign from two blocks, alright
never seems to help me sleep at night
i'll get my coat, forget my hat and fall down in the street
my own sorry party's in defeat
in the face of all the evidence i believe i'm safe from harm
when every night i return into your arms
and me, i'm gonna tell you one thing even though i know you're gonna hear another
but i don't care
i don't care
since when did you become the keeper of your brother?
you're waiting for me there when i walk in the bar alone
you're waiting for me when i get home
god. dammit. you're there, and i cannot get enough
but if i'm very lucky you're gone when i wake up

The Peregrine Effect Chicago, Illinois

Why I don't have a band.

Sad, angry guitar songs; the happier ones are usually about death.

All recordings are a reluctant compromise; I want to sing directly to your face in a sweaty basement.
